Today, one of the most important telecommunications technologies available is the Internet. Unlike other forms of communication, the Internet is completely versatile and offers lots of data sharing resources from video to telephone capabilities. Using the Internet is extremely simple, which makes it a perfect resource for everyone from the elderly to young children. However, getting the right Internet access can be tricky. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements from different companies that each claim to have the fastest service and the best deals. This can make it hard to figure out what is really the best service for today's Internet. The only way to deal with this is to get more information and to find out what each service really can offer.

“High speed Internet” and “broad band Internet” are both terms that are thrown around broadly without much thought given to exactly what they mean. By some companies' definition, both of these terms seem to refer to any form of Internet access that's faster than dial up Internet access. The trouble with this definition though is that there are a lot of technologies that can provide Internet access faster than dial up can. For example, there's satellite Internet, WiFi, DSL, broad band digital cable, G2, T1, and a variety of more exotic types of Internet access technology. While they're all faster than dial up, they range in speed from a couple of hundred kilobytes per second all the way up to one hundred megabytes per second. Some businesses, governments, and universities may even be able to access data at speeds of up to a gigabyte per second!

While many people would argue that it's already here, wireless Internet is one of the major up and coming technologies. In fact, in many urban areas, it's extremely easy to find WiFi hot spots through which to access the Internet on your laptop computer or other portable WiFi enabled devices. WiFi hot spots are now available in a variety of businesses like coffee shops, book stores, and dedicated Internet cafes. Wireless access is also frequently available through libraries and colleges- especially libraries associated with colleges.
