It used to be that you had to sacrifice a lot in order to gain mobility in your computing. That's because laptop computers used to have very limited functions compared with desktop computers. For example, when the first laptop computers had black and white screens, desktop computers had color screens. Even a decade ago, it wasn't unusual for a laptop computer to have a screen that just looked bulky with a wide border surrounding it and therefore really decreasing the size of the actual screen. The capabilities of earlier laptop computers were also disappointing with much slower processors, less RAM and many more compromises. Even now, laptop computers tend to be more limited than desktop computers but that's largely a matter of the difference in price rather than technological capability. The upper end in power, storage, and RAM in larger laptop computers is much the same as it is in full sized desktop computers. The main difference is that you'll pay a lot more to get all of that functionality in a laptop computer.

There are a variety of different types of devices appearing on the market these days that are designed to bring the home computer system together with the home entertainment system. They all take advantage of some kind of home networking technology to transfer various kinds of multimedia files from a computer (or directly from the Internet) and feed them directly into the home entertainment center so that they can be enjoyed in the living room rather than through the home computer.

One of the most interesting ideas to come out in the realm of home computing lately is the idea of a computer that the whole family can used in order to keep up with what all of them are doing. The idea is to have a computer in a central part of the house- most often the kitchen- and to function as a sort of high tech substitute for the old fashioned dry erase board on the refrigerator as well as a home entertainment center.

One of the amazing things about new technology is that manufacturers can pack so much power into such small devices. Historically, it used to be that if you wanted to film video of family trips, holidays, or even your own full length movie; you had to lug around a huge, heavy camera with a short battery life that produced blurry analog video onto clunky VHS video cassette tapes. Now, we've jumped ahead by centuries. Not only have the tapes gotten smaller, but we've been able to get rid of them completely by replacing them with writable DVD's, memory cards, memory sticks, and even hard drives installed into the camcorder itself!

One thing that has been kind of a challenge for professionals who need access to the Internet while also being mobile is getting a fast, long range, wireless connection that is also affordable. While many people aren't even aware that this is possible, there are actually a number of services that provide high speed Internet access using the same kind of technology that smart phones use to connect to the Internet. This is typically accomplished using a special card or chip set that either plugs into a laptop computer or even comes built into the computer. These electronics allow the computer to access the Internet in much the same way that a smart phone can access the Internet, only it will provide the user with all of the benefits of a full blown laptop computer.

LG electronics has just introduced a device that's likely to become the must have gift for the home entertainment fan who has everything- a high definition TV fridge. I'm not joking here. LG's new HD refrigerator has a 15in LCD screen that's capable of displaying HDTV resolutions installed on the appliance's door. This side by side model will let its owners watch TV while puttering around the kitchen and may be just what the home entertainment enthusiast who doesn't want their viewing interrupted by a case of the munchies asked for. Of course, with a list price of about $4000, it might not be a good item to give as a present this holiday season.
