Printing digital photographs in color yourself means using an ink jet printer and up until now ink jet printers- especially when printing in full color- have been very costly to operate. Generally, photographic prints on a traditional ink jet printer can cost as much as thirty cents for a typical four inch by six inch picture. That's significantly more than the cost of traditional 35mm film processed and turned into prints. Of course digital photography enthusiast still save money by only printing the shots that actually look good on their computer screens, but that $.30 print still has a pretty significant bite financially speaking of course.

In science fiction movies and TV shows the heroes always communicate with computers verbally in the form of a pleasant female voice that sounds surprisingly like the wife of the TV show's producer. The exchange is always relaxed and pleasant, and moves along easily even if the conversation isn't cheerful. This of course is a far cry from the voice recognition and voice synthesis software that we're familiar with today. Most often we have to deal with voice recognition software while calling a customer service department, and the experience is rarely as pleasant as it is on Star Trek. These conversations are plagued with false starts where the system doesn't understand the pronunciation of your name. And then when you spell your name, it still can't get it corrrect.

Modern telecommunications services are pretty exciting. Without leaving your home, you can have access to information and entertainment from all over the world. LG electronics has just began offering a device that's likely to become the must have gift for the home entertainment enthusiast who has everything- a HDTV fridge. I'm not joking here. LG's new (HD|high} def refrigerator has a fifteen inch LCD monitor that's capable of displaying HDTV resolutions mounted on the appliance's door. This side by side model will let users watch TV while hanging out in the kitchen and may be just what the home entertainment enthusiast who doesn't want their viewing interrupted by a case of the munchies needs. Of course, with a price tag of about $4000, it might not be a great item to give as a gift this holiday season.

One of the fascinating things about newer forms of technology is that manufacturers can pack so much power into such tiny devices. Historically, it used to be that if you wanted to record video of family outings, holidays, or even your own full length movie; you had to deal with a giant, heavy camera with a terrible battery life that recorded blurry analog video onto clunky VHS video cassette tapes. Today, we've jumped forward by light years. Not only have video cassettes gotten smaller, but we've been able to get rid of them entirely by replacing them with writable DVD's, memory cards, memory sticks, and even hard drives built into the camcorder itself!

DVD upconversion technology is something that doesn't get a whole lot of attention in general even though it has a huge potential to improve people's enjoyment of their movie libraries. Basically, a DVD upconverter will take a standard definition DVD and upconvert its picture to HDTV resolutions of 720p, 1080i, or even playable on a 1080p LCD HDTV. (Standard definition DVD's display images in with resolutions of either 480i or 480p on their own.) While the resulting picture isn't as good as what you'd get out of real HDTV programming or a high definition DVD in either Blu-ray or HD-DVD format, it will be much better than what you'd experience without any upconversion.

Consumers of mobile electronic devices generally have two different and opposite expectations that manufacturers have to take into consideration. These are the expectations that newer devices are smaller, but also that they're more easy to use. Satisfying one expectation or the other isn't actually an issue. After all, it's easy to build a lot of functionality into a larger product just as it's easy to make a product with few functions extremely portable, but it's hard to make them both into the same product. Surprisingly, these days electronic devices are so compact that the defining factor in how compact a device can be isn't restrained so much as what it's capable of, but by how easily its users can take advantage of those capabilities. You see, it's easy to build word processing and email abilities into an extremely small devices, but that ability is useless if there's no room for a keyboard on the device. In this case, the product needs to be large enough to accommodate the size of human hands.
